everything used to be better.

this is a silly thing to say.
but it may serve to capture an underlying sentiment in our world.
there exists an event in our visual history that could be identified as somewhat of a turning point.
a bridge between the old and new worlds of art.
a rift in the realm of high art.
an earthquake in the minds of purists.

the weight of this piece does not need to lie in the fact that it is Pablo Picasso.
but, more simply, in the verity that is a Great and Celebrated Master Painter.
a man who had gained and maintained international popularity in the 50 years prior to this filming. an artist who began working in a time when film was young, and television was a sleeping seed in someone's mind. documented here in his home for a film that would be seen by a great number of people in a great number of countries.
the simplicity/universality of this creative display, coupled with the massive dissemination provided by television, may have broken undiscovered, transparent barriers around the Fortress of Art.

everything isn't worse, just more different than ever.

certainly the Apple Computer company has seen the vision evident in this Piece. and perhaps it's influence has benefited them in ways beyond anyone's comprehension. in their use of it as a commercial, they have replaced the original music, but left the segment much as it appeared in the 1949 documentary Visite A Picasso.
